Jean-Michel Basquiat was a highly influential American artist whose work has defined the neo-expressionist movement of the late 20th century. Basquiat mixed various mediums in his paintings include poetry, drawing, and painting. His work defined the convention of integrating text and visual arts in the world of modern art while also blending elements of abstraction, figuration, with historical information to create a critique of contemporary racism and other power structures. His art was additionally regarded for its ability to distill the artist’s perceptions of the outside world to their essence and translate them into a unique artistic language. Though Basquiat tragically passed away at the age of twenty-seven, his large oeuvre of work has been celebrated and regarded as one of the most important bodies of work within the canon of American modern art.
