Stylish Trends For Fall 2024
It's true that not much changes when it comes to fall trends: we still all love the cozy, earthy colours that reflect nature, and the natural textures that are the perfect companion to these tones. However, there are always new fall trends to intrigue. These are our favourites.
'For fall 2024, I predict there's going to be a trend towards a sort of 'haunted dark academia' look, rather than the preppy-harvest look that's been popular the last few years,' explains interior designer Kathy Kuo.
This look for fall 2024 focuses on creating dark, moody, and super cozy spots in your home for reading and relaxing. Step up your bookshelf wealth with a lick of paint (bonus points for glossy reflective hues like the space above designed by Marie Flanigan), a comfy seat, and plenty of antique books.
'I like the idea of building on the dark academia look, which is certainly an aesthetic you can embrace year-round, and creating a vibe that's spooky and seasonal, yet still very sophisticated,' she explains. 'There's no reason to go overboard with orange pumpkins simply because the calendar has turned a page.'
Matching your ceiling colour to your walls, aka the art of color drenching, will enhance a room's coziness by creating the appearance of a lowered ceiling, which can be particularly important in fall when airy rooms can suddenly feel cold.
Colour drenching the room with fall colours, says Justyna Korczynska, senior designer at Crown Paints, can also be used to correct a room's proportions: 'With high ceilings you can put a darker colour at the top to visually lower the height of the room.'
Using a deep colour on your ceiling is one of the most on-trend ceiling paint ideas to create a snug atmosphere, no matter the room.
Following on from the viral unexpected red theory that has taken over our homes in 2024, designers are looking to take that into the colder months with deep burgundy, red wine hues.
As with most trends, this one has trickled down from the catwalk and will be big news in fashion this fall too. So it's definitely one to keep your eye on for accessories both in your wardrobe and home. Jodie Fried, co-founder of Armadillo says, ‘Deep ruby reds and earthy crimsons make a bold statement by enveloping the room with instant warmth and comfort.'
While decorating with burgundy sounds very bold, it can be easily introduced to your existing schemes in the smallest and most subtle of ways.
'Many fabric and wallpaper houses have been revisiting and recolouring their past collections for the whole of 2024, but it plays particularly well into the fall season, when we are all looking for warmer, bolder colours than the original work might have presented,' says Homes & Gardens' Lucy Searle.
'We are also seeing spaces that once might have been left plain being wallpapered or layered with curtains in these heritage motifs, bringing an authentic period feel and a wonderful sense of history to traditional homes in particular,' explains.
Look to jazz up a neglected space that warrants a fall makeover with some new pattern and print - whether that's through wallpaper, curtains, or a few new cushions.
While wooden floors have been center stage in many homes in the recent past, carpets and rugs are starting to regain popularity again. And fall seems like the perfect time to roll out something soft underfoot.
Fall is all about warm hues and earthy tones, which is why it's unsurprising that earth-toned carpets remain ever-present in rug trends. As for area rugs with central motifs, not only do they add visual interest but also add structure to your room's layout, creating a central focal point around which to position seating.
If you're looking for a year-round, timeless option something made from a natural weave like jute or sisal works great in both winter and summer.
Looking for new room colour ideas? Consider a fall colour scheme that looks good enough to eat with tones of chocolate brown, toffee and caramels, and of course: butter yellows.
Decorating with brown and terracotta decor is going to be popular for 2024. Tactile rugs in forest green hues are our new neutral. Visually calming and soothing to touch, mix and match with earthy finishes. Forgo trends and choose colours that resonate personally
For fall 2024, retailers Lulu & Georgia are taking us back to the 1970s with retro-inspired colours, tactile textures like boucle and velvets, and lots of pattern drenching. Take note.
Decorating with vintage pieces is a great way to evoke an autumnal mood, with darker woods and distressed finishes playing into the more rugged look fall is associated with. When it comes to decorating for fall, adding reclaimed pieces from vintage sellers or flea markets brings warmth and character to the space instantly making any house feel homey.
‘This year has been all about mid-century modern, you can’t open an interiors magazine or search for furniture without this trend being on show,’ says Kelly Collins, interior designer and head of creative at Swyft.
'However, towards the end of this year, we are going to see this Retro style move on and evolve into a more '70s feel. Think bold earthy tones still with strong pops of bright colours. Bold patterns are also back which obviously lends itself to this particular era,’ Kelly adds.
We've all been drawn to bleached, pale woods in the past thanks to the Scandi minimalist aesthetic, but 2024 seems to be the year of dark wood tones.
‘Rich walnuts and warm oaks are a wonderful way of bringing a touch of the outside and creating a warming, cozy feel in a kitchen that is perfect for the fall months,’ explains Bo Hellberg, CMO at String Furniture. ‘Earthy tones are perfect for enriching a space and bringing in a calming feel to a home.’
Natural finishes have also seen a rise in the last year, so look to include some tactile materials like rattan, wicker, and jute. ‘Embrace and combine a variety of natural materials to create a refreshing and inspirational space. From tremendously tactile natural grasses to wonderful woven fabrics, seek creative inspiration from your scheme.’ Suzanne Duin, founder of Maison Maison.
One of the biggest reasons we tend to redecorate slightly for fall is the desire to make a house look cozy. Cozy room ideas have become a necessity in many people's homes as the weather cools down and we look to relax with friends and family over the winter period.‘This relaxing and restorative look is all about creating a calming home retreat where you can kick back and recharge. Combining organic materials, natural textures, and a soft neutral palette across beautifully crafted furniture and accessories, each space has been designed to channel a mood that’s laid-back and liveable,’ recommends the head of creative at Barker and Stonehouse, Claire Hornby.
From cozy living room ideas to cozy corner ideas, the cozy trend is perfect for making a sung home to find sanctuary from the hectic outside world.
If you're looking to be super on-trend, might we suggest the chrome decor trend? While brass and gold metals have dominated for years, 2024 has seen the return of cool-toned silvery chrome decor.
From hardware to light fixtures and decorative items, there are so many ways to introduce chrome into your home. The polished surface will help to bounce light around the room, creating a sense of space and extra light for the upcoming longer, darker days and nights.
To avoid everything feeling like a spaceship, consider one statement piece per room layered up with plenty of plush matte textures like velvet and corduroy.
